i am not able to figure out how the selectFilter is supposed to be configured for templated display when “complex” object is used for data source. Altough i configure a template, the select dropdown only shows [object].

In-header filters operate with the cell value. So, the selectFilter displays the cell values in the options (which is an JS objest in your case).
It is not available to change this logic for the selectFilter

It was just a gut feeling that the selectFilter should/could use the template.
Well i guess dhtmlx can’t do everything for the users and also this way there is some work left to do for chatgpt
