What is the correct procedure to update an existing scheduler installation to the latest version in order not to loose the existing data? And what is actually the latest stable version?

Latest version is 2.3

Normally you need not do any special preparations. Each new version of component uses event info from previous one ( still to be sure , you can backup events_rec table in database, which stores info for all events )
Ok, thanks for your information! Is it advised to de-install first or is it ok to simly install the new version over the previuos one?

In case of WP - just install over previous installation.
In case of Joomla you need to deinstall the previous version of component before installing the new one.
