How would I integrate this with an application that is build on Java? I noticed that the examples all use PHP. How would I get the data from PHP into my Java application.

Actually the component is pure javascript, so it is server side agnostic and can be used with any server side platform. The same functionality as written in PHP scripts can be mimic in JSP scripts.
If you need java based version of SRND or DataProcessor samples - please send request to support@dhtmlx.com ( there are samples for JSP, C#.Net, Ruby-on-Rails, ColdFustion, which not included  in package but can be send on demand )
