MySQL server has gone away

Hello,
we a dhtmlxCombo field that usually works fine, but sometimes it returns the message:

Error type: LoadXML
Description: Incorrect XML

When I look to the page source then I see a message of “MySQL server has gone away”. Can this problem be caused for a limited connection time? Any ideas?
