Refereshing a Part of Page

Is it possible to refresh a part of page e.g. a certain HTML element.

Let me explain in detail. MyJSP page displays current active user from a SESSION variable. On clicking a differnt user name it is set as active in Session through a Ajax request. Now i need to update the new active user name on page. Instead of reloading whole page is it possible to reload only a certain HTML element?

You may load data by Ajax and set as innerHTML of a certain html container:

document.getElementById(“element_id_here”).innerHTML = “some data”;

Yes this is last option. Problem with this approach is if container element contains complex HTML code e.g. a Table it is hard to produced output on server side. Various component based frameworks like Tapestry/JSF provide this functionality and its very handy.
