It appears that when you split the grid, for example grid.splitAt(1), multiSelection using ‘Shift-click’ breaks. Is this a known bug? If so, is there a patch or work around?

Split mode has some limitations in functionlity. Multiselect is one of such limitations (actual for version 1.4). It will be chnaged in one of next releases.
