X-Axis chart labels overlap - chart adds year to date label

For my chart the x-axis titles are dates such as “09/17” and " 09/21", but the chart renders them as “09/17/17” and “09/21/17”. This causes the labels to overlap and become unreadable.

How can I either:

1. Cause every other label to go down one line (so they alternate which line they display on and thus have more room for the labels, or
2. Keep the chart from adding the year to the date
